Media Psychiatrist Gets Jacked

What the hell is a Media Psychiatrist?? Sounds like a fake psychiatrist, and by looking at the statements put out, I am pretty convinced that Carole Lieberman IS a fake psychiatrist. If not fake, she is definitely an idiotic one.

So here is what happened. FoxNews.com – infamous for it’s crappy reporting - decided to publish an article:

Is Bulletstorm The Worst Videogame In The World.

Cuckoo Carole Lieberman was cited as an expert and the article goes on to say:

Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist and book author, told FoxNews.com that sexual situations and acts in video games -- highlighted so well in Bulletstorm -- have led to real-world sexual violence.

“The increase in rapes can be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in video games,” she said.

Please take note that Bulletstorm is rated M (Matured) and does contain violence. BUT the game has NO SEXUAL SCENES whatsoever. It does use certain terms such as Topless / Gangbang depending on how the enemies are killed off in this shooter game, but it has absolutely no sexual scenes.

Obviously the article ticked off a lot of gamers but Wired.com decided to deal with the matter properly. In addition to contacting the doc, they also got in touch with Douglas A Gentile.

I don’t know where [Lieberman] would get any evidence for this opinion,” said Iowa State University professor Douglas A. Gentile, who studies the relationship between media and violence. “There’s really very little to substantiate her claims in research literature.”

Gentile has been researching violence in media since 1999. He has written books and studies about the psychological effects of videogames. When asked by Wired.com in a phone interview, he said very few mainstream games contain any real sexual content.

Explicit old games like Leisure Suit Larry and Custer’s Revenge, Gentile pointed out, are hard to find on store shelves nowadays.

No serious researcher is linking playing violent videogames with criminal violence,” Gentile said.

In a phone interview with Wired.com, Lieberman claimed countless studies could be used to validate her statement in FoxNews.com. Interestingly enough, she was unable to name even a single one of those countless studies.

Unable to answer the question properly, Lieberman said –

There are thousands of studies. I’d have to look through them or recent ones as far as finding one that specifically speaks about rape, and I don’t have the time to do that right now.

Obviously I know what I’m talking about or I wouldn’t be called upon to testify in front of Congress, I’ve been doing this research for over 20 years…. It’s all about violence, it all applies to rape. And it has been done on videogames less violent or less sexual than the current one that we’re talking about.

A calculated guess would be the Congress is just as stupid as she is.

For someone who has been doing THIS RESEARCH for over 20 years, it’s a bit difficult to understand why she couldn’t mention even a single one when asked.
