'No To Petrol' by 2015 - Merc!

Mercedes wants to eliminate petroleum from its lineup by 2015
"
The company’s next big step will be to launch a Smart electric car which is fuel and emission-free.
There are currently 100 Smart electric cars being given trials in London and they could be on the market as soon as 2010.
Professor Dr Herbert Kohler, responsible for Mercedes’ advanced engineering, told me he believes that by 2015 motorists will have switched almost completely to alternative fuel cars, certainly in cities, to eliminate the need for petrol and diesel in urban areas
Sigh, another one...

Well, we wait.

Face Recognition on Cigarette Vending Machines - Japan

age_recognition_vending_machine

Japs eh!

The vending machine uses Face Recognition to determine if the buyer is too young to be buying smokes or not. If the buyer looks young (as determined by the Face Recognition thing, which is reported to be 90% accurate), the machine apparently asks for a drivers license. Then the machine compares the picture on the drivers license to the face of the buyer. If it's a match, you get the ciggs. If not.. you don't.

Now, there is something even more interesting. The machine apparently is not able to differentiate between printed pictures and faces. Implying, if one were to hold (over his/her face), a photograph of the face of someone who looks old - one could still manage to get the smokes.
"
When the reporter went to check out the new age-verifying machines after they were introduced in the Osaka area in June, he soon discovered that the machines equipped with face-recognition cameras would let him buy cigarettes when he held up a 15-centimeter (6-in) wide magazine photo of a man who looked to be in his 50s.
The reporter also went to Kobe, where different face recognition hardware is being used. There, he bought cigarettes using an 8-centimeter (3-in) wide magazine photo of a female celebrity in her 30s. He also reportedly tried to use a 3-centimeter (1-in) wide photo, but the machines rejected it.

Tear My Heart Open

I tear my heart open, I sow myself shut
my weakness is - that I care too much
and my scars remind me - that the past is real
I tear my heart open - just to feel

drunk and I am feeling down
and I just want to be alone
I am pissed cause you came around
why don't you just go home!

cause you channel all your pain
and I can't help to fix yourself
you are making me insane
and all I can say is -

I tear my heart open, I sow myself shut
my weakness is that I care too much
and our scars remind us - that the past is real
I tear my heart open - just to feel

I tried to help you once - I guess my only vice
I saw you going down - but you never realised
that you are drowning in the water - so I offered you my hand
compassion's in my nature - tonight is our last dance

I tear my heart open, I sow myself shut
my weakness is that I care too much
and our scars remind us - that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

I am drunk and I am feeling down
and I just want to be alone
you should've never came around
why don't you just go home?

cause you are drowning in the water
and I tried to grab your hand
and I left my heart open
but you didn't understand

I can't help you fix yourself - but at least I can say 'I tried'
I am sorry but I got to move on with my own life

I tear my heart open, I sow myself shut
my weakness is that I care too much
and our scars remind us that the past is real
I tear my heart open just to feel

HTC Touch Diamond - SMS Alert

And the problems continue. Apparently the new ones being shipped are with a fix which supposedly sorts out some of the issues. I did find a link to the updated ROM - but it was a Rapidshare link and a 100 MB File. Didn't bother to download it. I am not sure if the fix is available in Kuwait, but will check it out with Cellucom.

For the SMS Alert - The problem:

When the phone is in Power Save mode and you get a text message, the five way key pad lights up but there is no alert tone. Implying, unless you look at the phone - you won't know that you have an unread message.

If you see the pad lighting and you wake up your phone (so to speak), Then it will beep (what's the point!, I would see the unread message anyway).

If you have one unread message and you get another one - the phone will beep, even if it is in the Power Save mode.

This is how I fixed it:

Start - Settings - Sounds & Notifications.
Notification Tab.
Event: Scroll to Messaging: New Text Message.

In Addition to Play sound (which was already checked, but didn't seem to sort out the alert issue), I checked Display message on screen and Vibrate.

Works fine now.

The more I use this, I come across more issues. But also, I am getting the hang of it. I don't dislike it - as much as I disliked it on the first day. I am still disappointed, but then I am getting used to the phone. I don't have a problem with the issues cropping up, as long as I can manage to find an effective work around.

UPDATE: Cellucom does have an update to the ROM. Just got it done. The TouchFlo is definitely much better now.

For those of you, who can't get the updated ROM or the general setting tweaks didn't work - here is a registry tweak (for the wake up on SMS): Thanks Zetxek

HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL : DisableSMSWakeUpEvent <-- set to "1" by default. Change value to "0"

To apply this, you will need a Registry Editor installed on your Diamond. I am using PHM Registry Editor (Copy the CAB file onto your phone and tap on it to install).

UPDATE: ROM Update now available on the HTC Website (E-Club)

HTC Touch Diamond - Data Connection - Auto Off

HTC Touch Diamond Angle800

Ok, I have tried and tried and I still can't figure out how to get this done. There seem to be some third party softwares with tweaks, but there are so many of them on the web.

I don't want to install one after another and then find out that it doesn't have the tweak that I am looking for. Other than that, the main reason is - I am just lazy.

The problem is - I access the web (usually my mail) from the Diamond. The Data Connection comes to life and everything works fine. When I am done with web and exit the browser, the Data Connection remains ON! Implying eating away on my battery. I have to tap the Connection Icon and then hit Disconnect, to close the connection.

There is an Auto Off for WiFi connections (thank god). Also, I can permanently disable GPRS, 3G or Edge Connections too, but that would mean I have to go and enable them each time I want use the web, and then go back and change it when I am done (in simple words - more work).

As of now, the only solution I have - other than tapping and switching off the Data Connection, is assigning functionality to Long Press - End Key. To do that, go to Start - Settings - System. Tap the Long Press End key - Icon. There select functionality to Terminate Data Connection.

That done, now, when you are done browsing the web or whatever, just hold down the End Key for a few seconds and the Data Connection will be closed.

I find it easier to do it this way than tapping on the screen and disconnecting the active connection(s) - Just my view.

If anyone finds a way to get the Auto Off working, please let me know.

HTC Touch Diamond - Got one

I was bored. A friend called, we met up, and I ended up getting an HTC Diamond for myself. I have actually been waiting for the SE Xperia X1.

The HTC Touch Pro had me confused, and I was wondering which one of them (Xperia or the Touch Pro) should be my next phone. But, I ended up today with the Touch Diamond (not as pricy as I had thought it would be, given that it hasn't been out for that long in Kuwait).

Impulse buy.

Not bad.. but... err... well I am just not too happy with it. It looks awesome and all. Actually rather sleek, but just .. ahh.. whatever. who gives a shit.

The stylus has this magnetic bit to it, so you don't have to push it all the way up into the slot. That's definitely cool (but for how long?).

The phone downloaded the set up for Zain (Internet Settings) on it's own. Just had to tweak it a bit (Username and Password). Seems to be working fine. No issues there.

Oh, btw, Just out of curiosity, I did try to use the Auto-Settings thing on the Zain website. Just wanted to confirm if they had the Auto-Settings for the Touch Diamond. Obviously, they don't. The message does show up, but just doesn't work.

The Touch flo thing too seems to work great.. time pass. but then, that will be cool for like a day or two, and then old news.

I do think the phone heats up a bit too much, but then again I am not sure if this should be considered normal for the HTC. More on that later (if I haven't chucked it out by then).

I haven't been able to get the Wi-fi to connect yet. Just doesn't seem to hook up with my 3com router. Perhaps something to do with the settings, Will fiddle with it later. Had a similar problem with my Sony Ericsson P1i, intially. Don't seem to remember how I sorted it out.

To be honest, I really couldn't care less. It's not like I hate the phone (not yet, anyways).

UPDATE: Got the WiFi working. Obviously nothing wrong with the phone, just needed to tweak the settings a bit.

Print This Post

Just added a style sheet code to the blog template, to make the posts printer-friendly. Basically, without the header and the sidebar and all that. Seems to be working fine, for now.

Readers of this blog (if any) who bother to try it out, and are using Internet Explorer - MIGHT NOT SEE the 'PRINT THIS POST' button - well basically IE is perhaps taking most of the stuff from it's cache and till that is cleared up (by the user or by IE on it's own) you might not be able to see the 'PRINT THIS POST' Button.

Anyways, I got the code from here. Needs to be added just before closing the head tag (</head>). Had to make a small change in the style sheet (the change is: .widget-content):

"

<style media='print' type='text/css'>
#header-wrapper, #header, .header, #sidebar-wrapper, .sidebar, #footer-wrapper, #footer, .date-header, .post-meta-data, .comment-link, .comment-footer, #blog-pager, #backlinks-container, #navbar-section, .widget-content, .subscribe_notice, .noprint {display: none;}
#main-wrapper {width: 95%}
</style>

With the above added to your template, the Print Preview should show you the page without the widgets, sidebars, headers etc. Seems to be working fine. Of course, the 'PRINT THIS' Button appears only on individual post pages.

Just thought of sharing the info, in case someone may find it useful for their own blog. I am sure most of the bloggers know how to go about it, and perhaps even have better ways to accomplish the same. I just found out how to do it and there might be some others too, like myself, who aren't as tech savvy.

New domain names on the internet

Well, right now, it's just a proposal.

"

The net's regulators will vote on Thursday to decide if the strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk, can be relaxed.

If approved, it could allow companies to turn their brands into domain names while individuals could also carve out their own corner of the net.

The move could also see the launch of .xxx, after years of wrangling.

SMS service to alert motorists on traffic jams - India

"

Starting in a month, motorists will be able to get updates on traffic situation at different spots across the city by sending SMSes to a convenient five-digit number.

"We have already applied for the number with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and expect to start the service in a month's time," Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sanjay Barve told PTI here.

Citing an example, Barve said, "Suppose you wish to travel from Chembur to Dadar and are doubtful about the traffic situation at Everard Nagar junction. You just SMS 'LOC REP', which stands for location report, to the five-digit number and immediately get a reply."

"The user will have to pay higher SMS charges to get the elicited reply as per the regulations but he can at least plan out his trip in a better way and take another route to complete the journey," Barve said.

Link

Interesting. Now, has anyone ever heard of RDS or TMC? Radio Data Service - Traffic Message Channel? Pretty sure no one who came up with the SMS idea has ever heard of it, or if they have, they haven't bothered much with it.

Anyways - Similar services have been available all over the world for a very long time for free. But apparently this (the traffic update by SMS) is going to be highlighted as the NEXT BIG THING COMING OUT OF SHINING INDIA! Sigh.. well something is better than nothing.

This, is an honest review. Perhaps one of the few ones that would be available for this movie. Simply because, not many would want to sound politically incorrect or insensitive.

Can't seem to comprehend why anyone would even want to make a movie like this? What could possibly he be thinking?

The movie is - in my view - pointless, extremely boring and needlessly stretched out. The running time is actually 1:38, but it felt a hell lot longer!

I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. Please don't bother with this.

...

Butter Chicken would like to thank Hyderabadi Zafrani Pulao.

I like to believe that I am not too bad a person and I don't wish ill for people, generally. Well, I like to believe a lot of things :).

The fact of the matter is - (in case of some individuals, I know), that I am - at times - very pleased with myself when I know that I have managed to tick them off or have managed to ruin their day (or a few minutes) by saying or doing something. That's just for some people (a very small number, you can actually count it on your fingers).

But, there is this one person. Just this one. I just love knowing that this person is smiling. Knowing that I had something to do with the smile, that just sends me over the moon. It doesn't matter if this person knows or not. Actually, in a sense, I think it's better if that person doesn't know. All that really matters is... that smile.

Yup. nonsense.. well, it's my weekend, and I am kind of high.

USD 205 Transfer - Financing Terrorism!

"

A Lolland dress shop owner has had a payment for six dresses made in Pakistan frozen by the US on fears that it is being used to support terrorism

The US government has taken the step of freezing a $205 payment from a Danish clothing boutique to a dress manufacturer in Pakistan, reports Berlingske Tidende newspaper.

Link

Christa Møllgaard-Hansen, owner of Christabella's in the town of Maribo on Lolland decides to buy six dresses from Pakistan, and wires a sum of USD 205 through her bank. The payment gets blocked. The bank asks for additional details which are provided by Christa, and then the Bank asks for the date of birth of Rashid - Christa's contact in Pakistan.

Guess the US intelligence has copies of terrorist group members' birth certificates.

Being vigilant is one thing. This is just down right stupid!

Anyways, next time you are buying something online, or transferring money to someone, just make sure to get the following details from the vendor/beneficiary:

  • Date of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Father's name
  • Mother's name
  • Siblings details
  • Spouse' name
  • Previous Occupation (for you and the entire family)
  • Does the beneficiary have a beard?
  • Does the beneficiary wear a head scarf / turban

Well you do want to cooperate with the US WAR ON TERRORISM, don't you? Include all of these along with the wiring instructions, in addition to the SWIFT Code and all that.

As a footnote, do mention - At the time of requesting this transfer, to the best of my knowledge, the beneficiary is not a member of any terrorist organization. Neither am I, Although we are both aware that you won't just take our word for it. Just trying to be helpful.

P.s All the best in finding Osama. Been a while, don't you think?

Under-age driving - Action against parents - India

"

NEW DELHI: With increasing number of road accidents involving vehicles driven by under-age boys, Union Minister Renuka Chowdhary on Tuesday said parents of such children should face the music.

"We will write to the Road Transport Ministry to take stringent action against the parents," the Women and Child Development Minister said reacting to the recent incident on Gurgaon Expressway where a car carrying three teenagers and allegedly driven by an under-age boy met with a fatal mishap.

Link

Yeah, blame the parents for everything. Smart move - Idiot!

Oh, and she also suggested that cell phones should be banned in schools. All the best with that (Kill joy).

Holding the parents responsible for what their kids are doing, hmm. How many kids do you know who actually obey everything their folks tell them? Hell - almost everyone I know - at one point or another - did sneak out of the house with the keys to their dad's car.

Some parents let their kids drive around. Some even buy them their own cars. But regardless of how the kids landed up with the car - my point is - WHY BLAME THE PARENTS?

You can teach your kids about what is right, what is wrong. But at the end of the day - the only thing that matters (and should matter) is the individual's decision/choice, the effort put in by that individual.

Next time there is someone on a murder trial, would the jury/judge entertain a defence motion that states - " It's not my fault, it's in my genes - OR - my parents should be on a trial, they didn't raise me right! "

If your kid fails his math exam, do you go and tell the teacher to appear for the re-examination? (regardless of how good a teacher may or may not be). Do you walk up to the teacher and yell at her? Is the teacher grounded for a week, without phone privileges?

"

Children have no idea about the risks involved!

Ha! Are you talking about kids in the 1st grade? Renuka thinks that the kids are as stupid as her! Do credit the kids with some intelligence. They are not as naive as you may think.

The one's who do take out the car - ARE VERY WELL AWARE ABOUT THE RISKS - not just the driving risks, but also the risks of getting caught. And that is probably the reason they do it. It's called being a rebel and having fun.

Under-age driving is wrong. Yes I have done it too. My dad didn't get blamed for it. There was no reason to blame him. It was my decision. Yes it was wrong and if anyone should be held responsible for it, it should be me.

And about the traffic incident/accident, well it's not like grown ups don't bang their cars or run over people or end up in fatal accidents. In this case, it just happened to be under-age divers off on a joy ride that didn't end the way they thought it would. Shit happens! Sorry for the family's loss. But blaming the parents for this... that's just stupid.

Bold Strategy

Bush's new strategy

Avoid queues at the Airport - Liverpool

I think it's a great idea. It makes sense to me. There is nothing wrong in paying for a convenience. The only thing is - if every passenger decides to get the ticket (Costs £2) - then the whole point of having a FASTLANE is lost.

The tickets can be bought at vending machines located throughout the terminal. You can also pre-book (online) and take a print out of a FastLane ticket.

"

Having purchased a ticket, passengers access the security screening area via turnstiles located on the level 3 of the terminal building. These turnstiles are easily identified with the FastLane logo. Simply insert the ticket into one of the machines and proceed through to the security screening area.

Unused tickets are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

£2 pays for a ticket which will allow entry to separate channel into the security screening area, bypassing the standard passenger queue. Your £2 will then be re-invested back into further enhancing the security search area. Whether it be expanding the area of the search comb, or contributing to the purchase of new equipment, the Fast Lane charges are all going towards reducing the overall wait time for all passengers.

Windows Embedded NavReady 2009

Hmm, guess PC Markets were just not enough. Ahh well... How much is enough? Just a little more!

Microsoft’s first embedded operating system designed specifically for OEMs building handheld portable navigation devices (PNDs) was announced today.

"

This release also provides a number of benefits that can help developers and OEMs quickly bring to market new scenarios in which the PND connects to other devices and online services. Features include the following:

  • Live Search delivers OEMs and partners key elements enabling Internet-based Live Search on devices to find up-to-date points of interest similar to the ones provided by the Live Search Maps service.
  • Bluetooth technologies enable OEMs to provide rich, hands-free scenarios to users with the following profiles: Hands Free, Pairing Service, Phone Book Access, Advanced Audio Distribution, Audio and Video Remote Control, Dial Up Networking and Bluetooth Connection Manager. Users will be able to use their PND device as a hands-free device to make phone calls or data connections when the device is paired with a compatible phone enabled with Bluetooth.
  • MSN Direct enables OEMs to incorporate MSN Direct technologies. These technologies can reduce users’ commute time while enhancing the travel experience by providing up-to-date information such as traffic alerts and fuel prices.
  • Windows SideShow functionality helps enable the PND as a secondary display screen for many Windows Vista-based PCs*, allowing Windows SideShow gadgets to interact and exchange information with the PND and providing a rich user experience at home or work.

Romantic Comedy - Well, I don't think so. It's watchable. That's about it.

It's not a funny movie, it's not a comedy (well I don't think it is), what it is - is - corny. A bit more on the stupid side actually (The words Stupid and Comedy, don't mean the same).

Some of the scenes were just horrible. like Kate Hudson walking in and throwing the plates all over the table when she sees Matthew McConaughey. A little too much, don't you think?

The dumb rich daughter.. err... come on! Just a bit of effort would be appreciated. Don't you think the bimbo thing is getting a little too old.

Perhaps there should have been a bit more work done on the script. Let me rephrase that - Perhaps it would have been better if they had a script to work with.

Kevin Hart and his henchmen - LAME!

Don't want to keep in touch

Well that's fine. Not that it doesn't bother me, but I do understand. Hell, there are plenty of people that I don't want to keep in touch with. I have told them so.

What I don't do is - go around scratching their cars with my keys. I don't say 'HI' to them when they happen to log on to an Instant Messenger. I actually block their contacts from the IM list. Isn't it simpler that way?

Sure we all have our reasons for talking to or not talking to someone. But it wouldn't be appropriate to say 'HI' one day on the IM - Chat for a few minutes - and then send an email the next day saying 'I am maintaining silence from my side'. Arrey! if you were maintaining silence, then why did you bother to chat online? I wasn't the one who initiated the chat.

Not keeping in touch - was your decision. A while later, you decided to chat. I assumed that you had changed your mind. And then you send an email saying you are MAINTAINING the 'not keeping in touch' decision... kya re?! Aren't things complicated enough?

Sigh.. shit happens.

Jab bhi ye dil udaas hota hai

Jab bhi ye dil udaas hota hai
Jaane kaun aas-paas hota hai

Honth chup-chaap bolte hon jab - saans kuch tez- tez chalti ho
Aankhen jab de rahi hon awaazen - thandi aahon mein saans jalti ho

Aankh mein tayrti hain tasweeren - tera chehra tera khayaal liye
Aaina dekhta hai jab mujhko - ek maasoom saa sawaal liye

Koi waada nahin kiya lekin - kyon tera intezaar rehta hai
Bewajah jab qaraar mil jaaye - dil badaa beqaraar rehta hai

Jab Nahin Aaye The Tum

The youtube thing says it's Kareena Kapoor, but whoever uploaded it - got it wrong. The vocals in this one are by Kavita Krishnamurthy. I like her version better than what Kareena sang, so I am putting this one.

Jab nahin aaye the tum - tab bhi mere saath the tum
dil main dhadkan ki tarah - tan main jeevan ki tarah
mere dharti - mere mausam - mere din raat the tum

phool khilte the - to aati thi - tumhaari khushboo
har haseen shaam jagaati thi - tumhaara jaadoo
aaine main mere har din ki - mulaqaat the tum

adh mundi aankh main sajtaa hua ek khwaab the tum
pehli barsaat main bheega hua mehtaab the tum
honth mere the magar inki har ik baat the tum

Kind of disgusting.Well, it's been rather disgusting so far.

I know money matters. But, this is was just err...Not my type at all. The movie is still playing and I am not enjoying it. Hate my friends for making me watch this crap. But I've put up with a lot worse.

Cameron Diaz - never liked her (no, I don't think she is hot)

Ashton Kutcher - don't like him either, I find him annoying.

Queen Latifah - Hate her. Always have. Her being in this movie didn't help at all. Thankfully so far there isn't much of her yapping to put up with, so far anyways. Don't think I am going to watch this till the end.

Koi ham-nafas nahin hai koi raazdaan nahin hai

Mustafa Zaidi...

koi ham-nafas nahin hai koi raazdaan nahin hai
faqat ik dil thaa apna so vo meharbaan nahin hai

kisi aur gham mein itni khalish-e-nihaan nahin hai
gham-e-dil mera rafiqo gham-e-raayegaan nahin hai

meri ruuh ki haqiqat mere aansuon se puchho
mera majalisi tabassum mera tarjumaan nahin hai

kisi aankh ko sadaa do kisi zulf ko pukaaro
badi dhuup pad rahi hai koi saayebaan nahin hai

inhin pattharon pe chal kar agar aa sako to aao
mere ghar ke raaste mein koi kah-kashaan nahin hai

Door Na Jaa

Sayeed Qadri ...

tera chehra - meri aankhon mein basaa rehne de
khud ko, thoda sa kahin mujh mein bacha rehne de
door na ja

aaj ke baad mera saara safar tanha hai
aur tere saath ka bhi akhri yeh lamha hai
aur kuch der mujhe khud se judaa rehne de
door na ja

ab kahin jaake mere dil ko yeh lagta hai
yaar ki baahon mein meri jannat ka jahan basta hai
aur kuch der mujhe in mein bandha rehne de

door na ja

Cool comment on the Autoblog

Came across a really cool comment on the Autoblog (Thanks Yousef). Just wanted to share it.

Here is the blog post

Comments about that post:

"

Please, let's get with reality. Infinity needs a G27 a lot more than the G37. The Lexus IS250 has good acceleration (not explosive, like the IS350) and gets mid-20s mpg in town and mid-30s on the highway.

There's demand for a smaller engine in the G. If the Infiniti management doesn't get with the program soon nobody will soon be able to afford to drive their cars.

"

@ Tai,

My Acura RSX is rated at 29 mpg by the EPA for highway driving, but I do slip it into neutral on downward hills. Gravity allows the car to accelerate for free. I get 40mpg on the interstate and around 34 in the city. On my 22 mile commute to work I'm in neutral for about 2.5 miles total, and there's plenty of room for more coasting.

If I get to a stoplight that just changed I'll turn the car off as I coast to it and watch for the crossing light to turn red so I can turn my car on without any delay. Also, driving at or below the speed limits has played a huge role in improving my economy. 60 mph on the interstate meant a 50% increase in fuel economy in my little four-banger that has trouble overcoming wind resistance.

Now I get as good a fuel economy as a Honda Civic Hybrid, but if I want to I can still punch it once in a while to merge or pass. Fuel economy is more dependent on driver habit than one might think, and there's no since in jesting about being smart and allowing gravity to accelerate for you. I'm not getting after you in particular, just using your comment to brag about how effective my driving behavior modification has helped.

And now... for the best comment

"

I just run my car with engine on when I go uphill. Then I push it the rest of the way to work. I get like 115 mpg, but it takes me 4 hours to get to work (20 miles).

Too cool !! LOL!!
