Wataniya Offer for National & Liberation Days

Nokia Admits (Finally): N97 Sucks

A little late in the day, don’t you think?

I am sure I wasn’t the only one who had put up posts about just how disappointing this handset was. But now when one of their EVP says it, can we hope that Nokia has finally decided to learn from it’s mistakes – OR would that be too much to expect ??

The N97 was a success for Nokia in terms of sales and the margins (money collected) on the device, but "it has been a tremendous disappointment in terms of the experience quality for the consumers".

Stuck At Airport For 10 Hrs, What Would You Do?

There is a lot to learn here. At least for me. I can’t think of a single productive thing I would be doing while stuck at an airport for 10 hours. This would at least be a lot more fun as opposed to what I would normally do, which is:

  • Complaining, Cribbing
  • Tweeting my cribs and complaints
  • Blogging about how much the airport sucks, how pathetic the security is, how people are behaving like idiots
  • Well, you get the general idea.

Who Funds Such ‘Studies’

Husbands' hostile and anti-social behaviour exacerbates symptoms of depression among their wives, says new research.

Nearly 10 per cent of the US population suffers from a depressive disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.

Christine Proulx, professor at Michigan University (MU), who led the study, attributes some of it to marital hostility.

They actually needed to do a research / study to come to that conclusion! People seriously have way too much time on their hands.

"In the study, husbands' marital hostility was significantly related to increases in wives' symptoms of depression," said Proulx.

"The more hostile and anti-social behaviour exhibited by husbands, the more depressed their wives were after three years," added Proulx.

You don't say!!!

These findings suggest that husbands' treatment of their wives significantly impacts their psychological well-being and that hostile behaviour has a lasting effect on couples that continues throughout their marriages.

No shit!

In contrast, warm, positive behaviour from husbands lessened the negative impact of their hostile behaviour.

My Name Is Khan

Watched the movie yesterday. No escaping, since sister is a SRK fan :(

IMHO - the movie can be termed watchable at best. Path breaking performances etc – err, I don’t think so. But then again, I am not easily impressed. Moreover, as many close to me have pointed out – WTH do I know about movies??

Just recently I read a book The Curious Incident Of The Dog In Night-Time. While I was watching SRK on screen, it seemed identical to the character in the book. That probably was part of the reason why I wasn’t AWED by SRK’s portrayal of Rizwan Khan. Add to that, every time Rizwan Khan ‘runs’ in the movie, it resembles Karan Johar’s walk! (when you watch the movie, you will know what I am talking about).

I would have definitely been fine with Kajol if she wasn’t so bloody loud in the movie. Hum ko zyaada shor pasand nahin. I have always hated her voice and in this one, it was just too loud. Some people … er correction – most people found the line ‘meri aankhon ka taara, budhaape ka sahaara’ rather cute. I found it annoying as hell.

A guy who runs a successful distributorship for Mehnaz Herbal Cosmetics in the states sends his autistic brother all alone, on the roads of San Francisco to sell beauty products. Hmm. It’s one thing to tell your brother to stand on his own feet. A whole different thing to send your autistic brother - who is terrified of the colour yellow – unsupervised, in a city he has never been to before, which is filled with yellow cabs!

The brother, the caring sister in law, the loving wife – no one is interested in actually finding out where this autistic fellow disappeared to??! A bit sad, if you ask me.

Bobby Ahuja – the sardar who got his hair chopped off after being mistaken for an Afghani / Muslim – for some reason best known to him, decides NOT to shave off his beard which makes him look even more like a Muslim than he would have looked with the turban on.

Mamma Jenny – Loud! In fact the entire Georgia part was just painful to watch. It got worse when they show people coming in with boxes of aide after watching Khan helping out in Georgia.

Round the clock footage of the destruction caused by the hurricane and people dying doesn’t touch your heart. But watching KHAN helping out just fills your heart with love and care. Damn! SRK is a Care Bear!

The soundtrack – in my opinion – isn’t that bad. Hummable for sure. But then if you have been getting bombarded by the music for close to two months on every channel after every 2 minutes, even the crappiest songs of Himesh Reshammiya become hummable. Like I said, these weren’t bad, but I have definitely heard better.

My name is Raj and I don’t like crappy movies, regardless of the hype they manage to generate.

Kaisi Hai Ye Udaasi Chaayi

Lyrics – Javed Akhtar …

It’s such a relief to listen to something like Kaisi Hai Ye Udaasi. I was beginning to wonder if all the lyricists had taken a collective decision that the words didn’t really have to make sense.

Kaisi hai ye udaasi chaayi - mere dil
Kaisi gehari hai ye tanhai - mere dil

Raahon mein yaadon ki khamoshi barse
Ankhon mein jo gham hain - aansu ko tarse
Ye bataa ye kyun hua
Bujh gaya kyun har dia

Kaisi hai ye udaasi chaayi - mere dil

Jo bhi mila, woh kho gaya
Tujhko pataa hai aisa hi sadaa hota hai
Jaana hi tha woh jo gaya, dil tu akela aise kyun bhalaa rota hai

Bhoole jo hain tujhko ab unko bhool ja tu bhi
Warna mere saath yaadon ke zakhm kha tu bhi
Maan ja ae dil mere
Bhool ja shikve giley

Kaisi hai ye udaasi chahie

Tu hi bataa ae dil mere
Maine to humesha tera hi kahaa maana hai
Kyun hai mujhe ye gham ghaire
Mujhe umar bhar kya bas yahi sazaa paana hai

Sapne boye maine aur dard maine hain kaate
Gaaye geet maine aur paaye maine sanaate
Aarzoo nakaam hai
Suni si har shaam hai

Kaisi hai ye udaasi chaayi - mere dil
Kaisi gehari hai ye tanhai

School Spies On Students Through Laptop’s Webcam

High School students have sued the Lower Merion School District in Philadelphia for spying on them using their laptops' built-in cameras

This is just stupid. Not to mention, illegal.

Lower Merion School District provided it’s high school students with laptops which – according to the students – were set up with a software that would enable the school administrators to spy on the students through the webcam installed in the laptop.

For some reason, the school authority thought this was a good idea. Obviously it’s too much to expect people to use common sense anymore, but I guess the school administrators don’t watch the tele or even read newspapers. Someone even with half a brain would be able to conclude that such a stunt can only lead to trouble.

Just in case you had any doubts about just how retarded the school administration is, check this out. A student is disciplined for “improper behaviour at home” (!!??). When the parents show up to school, the Vice Principal shows the parents a photograph taken using the webcam.

Me thinks the Vice Principal is suicidal and definitely needs some Prozac. In addition to a lot of slaps across the face.

Kindle For BlackBerry

kindle_blackberry has released a Kindle application for Blackberry users, giving them access to their e-books on a smaller screen.

The application allows users to access the Kindle shop and read one of its 400,000 books on a small screen.

But the Kindle for Blackberry application is only available for users in the U.S. It is unclear whether or when the firm might offer a similar app elsewhere, like over here.

TOI Website – New Look Is Messy

 New Picture

When you click on the headline to read a story, the look is just too messy. Hate the fact that the text isn’t justified, but that’s the least of the problems. There are way too many ads!

  • Right at the top.
  • Ribbon thing below the horizontal menu.
  • The ads on the left and right.
  • The worst is the one at the bottom of the page that stays at the bottom even as you scroll.
  • The ‘Follow us on twitter’ banner getting popular on almost every site is just annoying. Hate that bird.

I would really prefer a text link as opposed to the banner (for Twitter). Even the ads – Text ads/links wouldn’t be that bad. But these colourful boxes / ribbons are extremely annoying.

Whiskey Lullaby

Thanks Reshma …

She put him out like the burning end of a midnight cigarette
She broke his heart. He spent his whole life trying to forget

We watched him drink his pain away, a little at a time
But he never could get drunk enough to get her off his mind

Until the night:

He put that bottle to his head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away her memory

Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength he had to get up off his knees

We found him with his face down in the pillow
With a note that said I'll love her till I die
And when we buried him beneath the willow
The angels sang a whiskey lullaby

The rumors flew but nobody knew how much she blamed herself
For years and years she tried to hide the whiskey on her breath

She finally drank her pain away a little at a time
But she never could get drunk enough to get him off her mind

Until the night

She put that bottle to her head and pulled the trigger
And finally drank away his memory

Life is short but this time it was bigger
Than the strength she had to get up off her knees

We found her with her face down in the pillow
Clinging to his picture for dear life
We laid her next to him beneath the willow
While the angels sang a whiskey lullaby

Sarah Palin’s Hand Notes

For those of you who have no clue what this is about:

Take a look at Sarah Palin's hand here, on which she apparently wrote notes on in anticipation of being asked at the Tea Party convention what the priorities of a Republican congress should be. Her hand read: "Energy ... Tax cuts ... Lift American spirit." A few thoughts:

The Complete Package ?!?

Hmm. People talk about the complete package. Well, here are some interesting facts about some people and their complete packages.

Specimen 1:

Decides on what girl he will marry based on a very specific criterion - Which family offers more dowry. Yes he is married now. Feel really bad for the girl.

Specimen 2:

Soon to be wife has an accident. Thankfully she is fine – shaken up, but unhurt. She calls her fiancé and tells him that she was in a car accident. Fiancé replies: “Well, drive carefully”. Hangs up.

Still talking about the same guy – living off his fiancé's income for a few months. Gets married (still jobless) and then lands up job thanks to mom’s waasta (Please note, he is a mama’s boy). Career line he chose is such that, the only way he can get an increment is if the government hikes up the salaries OR he moves to another country.

So, obviously mama’s golden boy has been mooching off his wife (even before marriage) and continues to do so. Add to that, he has a serious lack of manners / courtesy and the IQ of a 10 year old. Forget about talking to others properly, he doesn’t even talk to his supporting (in more ways than one) wife properly.

Specimen 3:

Claims to be qualified but yet to get his degree which he supposedly completed over 4-5 years ago. Has a job but has mounted considerable credit card debts, so papa dearest (who is retired btw) helps clear off the debts and makes peace with the fact that the son can’t give any money at home (nope, not even helping out with the rent). Younger sister on the other hand places all of her salary in papa’s hands.

It gets better. He wants to get married. The father is more than happy to pay for the marriage (and for the gifts that he is supposed to give to his wife). The guy just has enough money saved to organise a honeymoon trip (week in Goa).

Specimen 3, at the time of finalising the girl for his marriage has decided that he will quit his job here in Kuwait and move to Australia with his wife, who is working as a nurse in Australia. Resigns immediately after the marriage. Asks his sister to help him out with some money because he doesn’t have enough to buy himself a ticket to Australia!

Lands in Australia where the WIFE has bought a house and has set up things. Our man looks for a job and concludes that even before he gets a job or a permanent residence in Australia, what he needs is a car. Obviously the wife pays. Finally got a job. Hoping his wife doesn’t have to pay for his whims anymore.

Specimen 4:

Jobless, right now but hunting for a girl to get married to. Meets a girl. Likes her. Knows her for about a month and suggests – “I don’t want your parents or my parents to shell out money for our marriage. WE will pay for our marriage ourselves. I don’t feel right taking money from parents”.

As cool as that sounds, considering cool guy is jobless at the moment and intends to get married by the end of the year – me thinks when he said WE will pay for our marriage, he meant YOU will pay for our marriage.

He is still job hunting btw. Hope he finds a job soon. He might not be able to contribute even half for the marriage, but at least he will be able to contribute SOMETHING. Wonder how he proposes to set up a house where he will take his wife. May be WE will be saving up for that too. Or perhaps it doesn’t matter if parents pay for that. A gift for their ohh so cool and principled son.

Intriguing. Big talks about not taking money from parents but is jet hopping Kuwait, India, within India, Kuwait all on parent’s money. Can’t support himself right now, but has finalised the girl he will marry within the year. The date might not be set, but the month sure is.

Doesn’t want to take money from his parents, but has absolutely no shame in telling a girl he has known for a month that she should contribute for the marriage – given that he is jobless and doesn’t have any source of income at present!

I would probably understand if this was a love marriage, but it's not. It's an arranged marriage, which gets me thinking, what sort of parents would finalise a date for their son's marriage, when he can't even support himself.

Worse yet, what sort of parents would be eager for their daughter to accept such a proposal!!?

Apne aap ko to sambhaal nahin sakte… shaadi karke ghar kaise chalaaoge?? And if that wasn’t bad enough – big impressive talks about – I AM AGAINST TAKING MONEY FROM PARENTS. HAAA!

When I see all this, I ask my friends: “is she happy?” and I am shocked when I get the answer “YES”. I almost concluded that women like losers and want to be with crappy partners. But then … a friend of mine tried something similar and his wife just walked out of the house.

Confused… IS NOT THE WORD. It’s not that just the parents are fine with picking someone like this for their daughters, even the girls seem to be fine with it!

Pic is from:

This wouldn’t make much sense to everyone. But right now, it makes a lot of sense to me. May be tomorrow or the day after, it won’t.

Someone insists that you change certain things about yourself. Making a few changes in my lifestyle is something I would do ONLY IF - I am getting something better by doing that. I would be lying if I said I haven’t changed anything about myself in the past years.

There are some people who mean more to you than others. In those cases, making changes is NOT a compromise. To put it simply - you are focussing on what is more important to you – what means more to you. Then it’s not like you are giving up anything at all. You are simply working towards getting what means more to you.

It could be something as trivial as travelling economy class instead of business. Or something as pointless as not buying a new pair of shades every month. The nature of the change is hardly of any relevance.

It’s good if the feeling is reciprocated. i.e. X means the world to Y. Would be extremely ideal if Y means the world to X as well (Assumption 1)

Coming back to the point I was trying to make:

(Speaking only for myself here) Some changes are made. I am the best ONLY in my element. Give me something to do, that comes natural to me - the result will definitely be the best. It will be effortless on my part. If I were to do something I am passionate about – the result would definitely be the best.

At the same time, if I have to do something I am good at, but not as much passionate about – the result would be good, but obviously NOT the best. You have taken me out of my element. I can try to be good. I can work on making it better, but it simply can’t be the best.

Yes, I can be “the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be” (Crtsy: Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart) – BUT only in my element. If there have been any changes, the balance is lost. I can no longer be the BEST, simply because the environment or my element has undergone some change.

The balance can be rather easily restored ONLY if the Assumption 1 (mentioned above) holds true.

Yeah, just in one those moods. Left the sheesha joint early today. Should have stayed a little longer.

I would see a shrink. But then, who is going to help out the shrink after he has had a peek inside my head?!

It may sound absurd.. but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed

I may be disturbed, but won't you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream

it's not easy to be me

Lobo – Don’t Expect Me To Be Your Friend

Thanks Manjula …

I stopped sending flowers to your apartment
You said you aren't home much anymore
I stopped dropping by without an appointment
Because I'd hear laughter coming through your door.

Sometimes late at night you will still call me
Just before you close your eyes to sleep
You make me vow to try and stop by sometime
Baby that's a promise I can't keep.

I love you too much to ever start liking you
So lets just let the story kind of end
I love you too much to ever start liking you
So don't expect me to be your friend.

I don't walk down through the village or other places
That we used to go to all the time
I am trying to erase you from my memory
Because thinking of you jumbles up my mind.

I love you too much to ever start liking you
So lets just let the story kind of end
I love you too much to ever start liking you
So don't expect me to be your friend.

You always act so happy when I see you
You smile that way you take my hand and then
Introduce me to your latest lover
That's when I feel the walls start crashing in.

I love you too much to ever start liking you
So lets just let the story kind of end
I love you too much to ever start liking you
So don't expect me to be your friend.

Hello Kitty Chainsaw

Koena Mitra - B’lore Airport

They asked me why I was wearing torn jeans and told me, ‘Youngsters look upto you, you are a trendsetter, why do you do such things?’

Sigh.. Would be so much better if people would just shut up and do their jobs. If such comments weren’t passed by the authorities, I wouldn’t have bothered with this post. It’s their job to check / frisk. Do the routine. Some might be harassed more than the others – well, shit happens. Move on. But that comment isn’t the only reason for this post.

I have always had a problem with airport security. In my opinion, the system in place – at present, is pointless. I have mentioned it earlier on my blog as well (a couple of times). One of them is here.

Coming back to the Koena Mitra incident, here is the interesting part that prompted this post:

Interestingly, amidst all this stringent checking, security officials failed to notice a pair of scissors, a nail-filer and three bottles of perfume that Koena was carrying, clearly flouting the security norms. “While they were worrying about my torn jeans, hooded T-shirt and hair, they forgot to check my handbag, which had a scissors, a nail-filer and three bottles of perfume, when only one is allowed. No one even noticed it,” says Koena

Hmm, and these guys wont let me take a matchbox or a lighter. Maadar beeps.

Dave Keeps His Job

Dave, would be the Investment b(W)anker on YouTube and I am pretty sure everyone would be familiar with him by now.

David Kiely became an internet sensation when the Channel 7 interview, showing him looking at images of model Miranda Kerr, was posted on YouTube.

A massive internet campaign was launched to save his job and Ms Kerr also pleaded his case. Macquarie said it had completed an inquiry and that Mr Kiely would stay.

In a statement it said: "He will remain an employee of Macquarie. Macquarie and the employee apologise for any offence that may have been caused."

And this would be Ms. Miranda Kerr. Pretty sure you guys can find better pics of her on the net.

There is blood. There is gore. Obviously I liked it.

Did I enjoy the bloody scenes in the movie? Most definitely yes. Those scenes were entertaining indeed. As far as watching the movie goes – well, I enjoyed almost every scene in the movie – barring the dumb cop-turned electrician-turned zombie towards the end of the flick. That one was.. err..not really needed, if you ask me.

I can’t emphasise this enough - the blood and the gore is definitely to my standards. BUT, if I were to talk about this as a movie, its lacking. I guess, when one wants to put in so much blood / violence – making sense just gets in the way.

I am not complaining. The scenes were definitely enjoyable. I just think the movie could have easily been made a hell lot better. The prego chick could have put in some more effort into her acting. The dubbing should have been better. Last, but definitely NOT the least - the dumb cop routine really didn’t have to be so dumb. Seriously, mate.

You are sitting in the car and you hear gun shots from inside the house:

  • You don’t call for back up?!!
  • You were yapping with your girl friend on your cell phone, but when you see a pregnant woman drenched in blood and 4 dead bodies thrown all over the house (2 of them are your cop buddies, one of them lying dead greeting you as soon as you open the door) – what do you do?? You say you will go and call for back up and an ambulance FROM YOUR CAR??!
  • You leave the blood drenched pregnant woman all by herself? (I know of insensitive men, but COME ON!)
  • And then, you want to go fix up the circuit breaker! You think the pregnant chick is crying, screaming, hysterical because she is missing the air-conditioning!?!

Stupid, incompetent, pathetic, rubbish.

The part where the lights come on and we have a zombie dumb cop / failed electrician swinging away – I honestly felt that scene should have just been thrown out. I didn’t get it.

Will be watching this again.

Universal Soldier : Regeneration

Nothing much to say about this. Nothing much to watch either. Lame low budget production, if you ask me.

Was looking forward to Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren together again. Actually, that was the only reason I bothered downloading this. Disappointed, to say the least.

The only good parts were when the Universal Soldier(s) get into their ‘combo punches to the face’ routine. Barring that, nothing worth watching.

Hindu Gods On US Stamps

Hindu gods have made their way into US mail, with an Atlanta based company headed by an Indian American launching a series of legally valid custom-made postage stamps.

The first of these 44 cent stamps featuring Sri Krishna, Shiva-Parvathi, Lakshmi, Lord Venkateshwara, Murugan, Vinayaka and Sai Baba were issued by last month.

Oh boy. Not that I think there is anything wrong with it, but I am so sure that this is going to be made into an issue. Some people are going to be ‘offended’ and there will be absurd discussions about putting monetary value on gods images and ‘disrespecting’ the religious sentiments of a community.

Wonder if there will be any PIL’s filed? Hmm.

What?! arrey – Duniya mein paaglon ki kammi thodi hai. Har baat ka issue banaa dete hain.

Interesting part though – It’s really not that big a deal. Personalised ‘stamps’ have been in use for ages and just about any image can be used. Would be nice if TOI would have hit on that too.

Ahaa. Here we go:

Arvind Taneja,St Louis, says:Its not a metter to cheer about but to be concerned. People who will use these stamps here in U.S, will have no knowledge or respect for the Hindu deity's. Such things should only be discouraged.

raj,toronto,says:this is not good ; a disgrace .There place is in temples and not stamps ;

Rama,Bothell, says:It is worth appreciation that our Gods made it on US stamps. On the other hand it would be pathetic to see these stamps making their ways to trash torn in to pieces after the recipient opens the letter. We are sensitive towards our Gods and their images ( and I believe it has to be this way) but very insensitive knowing that we dump these images in garbage knowingly or unknowingly. I am sure some one would have got into this issue and there might be a philosophical way to understand this. it would be great if some one can post a message to ans this.

WANTED – Brains for the person who came up with the above poster.
