Hindu Gods On US Stamps

Hindu gods have made their way into US mail, with an Atlanta based company headed by an Indian American launching a series of legally valid custom-made postage stamps.

The first of these 44 cent stamps featuring Sri Krishna, Shiva-Parvathi, Lakshmi, Lord Venkateshwara, Murugan, Vinayaka and Sai Baba were issued by usa-postage.com last month.

Oh boy. Not that I think there is anything wrong with it, but I am so sure that this is going to be made into an issue. Some people are going to be ‘offended’ and there will be absurd discussions about putting monetary value on gods images and ‘disrespecting’ the religious sentiments of a community.

Wonder if there will be any PIL’s filed? Hmm.

What?! arrey – Duniya mein paaglon ki kammi thodi hai. Har baat ka issue banaa dete hain.

Interesting part though – It’s really not that big a deal. Personalised ‘stamps’ have been in use for ages and just about any image can be used. Would be nice if TOI would have hit on that too.

UPDATE:

Ahaa. Here we go:

Arvind Taneja,St Louis,says:Its not a metter to cheer about but to be concerned. People who will use these stamps here in U.S, will have no knowledge or respect for the Hindu deity's. Such things should only be discouraged.

CARETAKER,India,says:I STRONGLY OBJECT TO THE USE OF HINDU GODS AND GODDESSES BEING USED AS POSTAGE STAMPS SINCE THE LETTERS BEARING THESE STAMPS MAY FALL TO THE FLOOR OR INTO THE STREETS OR ROADS WHERE PEOPLE WILL BE WALKING OVER THESE STAMPS. THIS IS INSULTING TO THE HINDU GODS AND GODDESSES AND CAN NOT BE TAKEN LIGHTLY. THEREFORE, THIS ATLANTA COMPANY AND THE US POSTAL SERVICE MUST STOP USING THE PICTURES OF OUR HINDU GODS AND GODDESSES IN POSTAL STAMPS. OTHERWISE THERE WILL BE WORLDWIDE UPROAR AGAINST THIS USE.

raj,toronto,says:this is not good ; a disgrace .There place is in temples and not stamps ;

Rama,Bothell,says:It is worth appreciation that our Gods made it on US stamps. On the other hand it would be pathetic to see these stamps making their ways to trash torn in to pieces after the recipient opens the letter. We are sensitive towards our Gods and their images ( and I believe it has to be this way) but very insensitive knowing that we dump these images in garbage knowingly or unknowingly. I am sure some one would have got into this issue and there might be a philosophical way to understand this. it would be great if some one can post a message to ans this.
